Stars & Bars

Harry Davis capturing the battle flag of the Twentieh Louisiana Regiment at the battle of Ezra Church

Atop some distant southern crag
I spied a confederate battle flag.
I felt my warrior’s spirit sag,
for I am a Union soldier

To think that some still hoist that rag.
The honor of the Union drag
thru mud and blood and battle slag,
a disgrace to a Union soldier

They sing of ‘Dixie’, racist tag!
Where slaves behind their masters lag
Compelled to fill their cotton bag.
Were it not for the Union soldier

“The south gon’ do it agin”, they brag
It’s enough to make a grown man gag
If that traitorous flag wasn’t bound to snag,
On the spear of some Union soldier.
